I’ve been moved by the tremendous outpouring of support we’ve received for our lifesaving work in Haiti. Your generosity is making a difference.

We thought you’d like to hear "thank you" directly from Haitians you’re helping. Even as they struggle to cope with the devastation after the earthquake – losing their homes, their jobs, their friends and family – they wanted to thank you for the hope you’ve given.

Now it’s my turn to personally say thank you. When many Haitians thought they had no future after the earthquake struck, supporters of the World Food Programme generously stepped forward.

What we’ve been able to accomplish in Haiti, thanks to you, is truly remarkable. Your donations have been immediately put to good use. We have:

  • Provided more than 4 million people with food assistance. We’re also responding to the special needs of children and pregnant women.
  • Started cooking meals for schoolchildren in Port-au-Prince. The goal is to reach 72,000 children from some 148 schools. This is in addition to school meals programmes that have already resumed in many parts of the country.
  • Put nearly 500 staff on the ground, operating around the clock to ensure as many people as possible receive the food assistance they need.
That’s just the beginning of our urgent relief and recovery work in Haiti. Part of our recovery strategy is to support people who are at risk, boost attendance and learning through school meal programmes, and empower the local population to rebuild food security and their lives.

Throughout the weekend, we’ve been tracking two additional tragedies – flooding triggered by heavy rains in parts of Haiti where earthquake survivors are living in camps, and the 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday.

While the quake was far stronger than the one that struck Haiti, human suffering in Chile will be far less extensive due to the location of the earthquake and the country’s long history in preparing for such disasters. Our teams are on standby to help if needed.

I am heartened to know that individuals like you will step forward when called upon, not only to extend a lifeline in a crisis but also on behalf of the billion people who are chronically hungry around the world.

Because the World Food Programme relies entirely on voluntary contributions, our critical work would not be possible without your support. You demonstrated the power of individuals to come together and make a tremendous difference.

Popular Science를 출판하는 Bonnier는 디자인 에이전시인 Berg와 합작으로 컨셉 타블렛을 공개했다. 현존하는 e-book 경쟁을 새로운 차원으로 이끌어갈 것이 분명하다. 아마존, 소니, 삼성, 아이리버, 후지츠 등은 이미 점유율을 놓고 난투극을 벌이고 있지만 내가 끌리지 않는 점은 전자잉크가 모두 흑백이기 때문이다. 조만간 컬러 잉크가 양산화 된다고 하는데 어떻게 균형이 옮겨질지 궁금하다. 애플의 타블렛 소식이 무성하다 못해 시들한 요즘 Mag+는 신선한 전환점을 마련해 주지 않을까?

컨셉을 보여주는 영상이기에 시제품이 아니라는 점과 양산이 이루어지면 어떻게 변할지 지켜봐야 하겠다. 제품을 앞에 두고 깔끔하게 차려 입은 발표자가 설명을 해주는 형식은 우리에게 친숙하다. 근데 버그의 잭 슐즈는 지금까지 봐 온 발표자 중에 가장 근사하다. 남자인 내가 봐도 반할 정도다.

Vincent Laforet: 사진에서 영상으로

빈센트 라포레는 2002년 퓰리처 공동수상 및 PDN이 선정한 '30세 미만 사진가 중 주목할 30인'에 오르는 등 저널리스트로 탄탄한 길을 밟고 있었다. 그런 그가 사진기자 생활 14년 만에 5D Mark II를 만나며 인생역전을 맛본다. 퓰리처상을 수상한 사실 보다도 5D Mark II 출시 직전에 공개한 동영상으로 훨씬 유명해지면서 스틸 사진에서 영상으로 커리어의 전환점을 맞게 된 것이다.

우선 그의 등장을 알린 초기작을 살펴보자.




Reverie는 2008년 공개 당시 엄청난 파장을 일으켰고 full HD 영상을 탑재한 5D Mark II의 성공에 쐐기를 박아준다. 이를 계기로 그에게 영상 제작 의뢰가 쏟아지는 등 하룻밤 사이에 HD DSLR '대부'가 됐는데 위 영상은 지원금이 없어서 자비로 약 3일 동안 만들었다고 한다. 문제의 제작비를 지원하지 않은 캐논은 대여해준 카메라를 회수하며 동영상도 가져가서 잘 활용했지만 서로 윈-윈한 상황이니 불만이 없었고, 일년 뒤에 1D Mark IV도 먼저 손에 쥐게 해준다.

곧바로 시장은 흥분의 도가니에 빠지며 HD DSLR만을 위한 틈새시장이 유례 없는 호황을 누린다. 그동안 비용 문제로 고심하던 각종 분야의 사람들이 주목하기 시작한다. 




First Look은 서핑 선수인 제이미 오브라이언을 촬영한 영상으로 Red One과 병행하여 녹화했다. 제작자의 등장과 스태프 구성이 완성되며 본격적으로 영상 전용 장비를 갖추기 시작한다. 제작 과정을 보면서 알게 됐지만 라포레는 전자 뷰파인더로 구도를 잡고, 옆에 보조자 한명이 2인 1조로 외부 LCD를 보며 초점을 맞춘다. 짧은 시간 안에 이렇게 발전한 것을 보면 그의 실력이 우연이 아니라는 사실을 알 수 있다.




올해 10월 1D Mark IV로 촬영한 최초의 영상인 Nocturne. 발표 직후 캐논의 요청으로 비공개로 전환했으나 이미 유출되어 볼 수 있다. 이제 무슨 말이 더 필요한가?

사진기자로 쌓은 순발력과 프레임 안에 보여지는 수준급의 감각은 앞으로 라포레가 보여줄 작업에 더욱 큰 기대를 갖게 된다. 옆에 링크에도 추가하겠지만 그의 웹사이트는 http://www.vincentlaforet.com/ 이다. 포트폴리오 사이트 방문은 업계 사람이라면 필수고, 블로그는 그의 바쁜 일정으로 인해 업데이트가 뜸할 때도 종종 있지만 밀도 있는 포스팅을 보여준다.

영상 작업에 대한 관심이 깊어지는 겨울의 어느 날, 밖에 나가진 않고 앉아서 이러고 시간을 보낸다.
